On April 1st the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta reported that hundreds of gay men have been abducted, they have been forced to disclose other LGBT individuals to the authorities, they have been tortured and as many as 20 men have been reportedly killed. This is something we must speak out in public condemnation of.
We note the actions of many lobby groups and we stand side by side with those working towards action and the release of these men from the detention centres including the Russian LGBT network. The statement by the regional government which appears to condone these actions whilst at the same time denying the existence of gay men is unacceptable.
Some reports have described the detention centres as concentration camps and this is simply incomprehensible. We must all work together to ensure the release of the men in Chechnya and support those who have escaped the camps.
This is Homophobic and must stop.
The National network and European LGBT Police association are working with Stonewall in eastern Europe to influence police services in their treatment of LGBT citizens and the situation in Chechnya exemplifies the need to continue with this work in particular with those who share a common border.
